Yes, a fabulous journey and indeed a life changing one, at that –
The food was the freshest and healthiest I have seen anywhere – and no where in the States. It was so simple to eat well as the mainstay of the Balinese diet is chicken, fish, veggies , fruit and locally grown rice. I do not eat rice and that was easy to avoid. Otherwise, eating and eating ‘out’ was remarkably simple, which was a pure joy. Chickens are killed fresh by the day, fish is fresh, if there is beef it is fresh as well (although not normal to the local diet).
Green coconuts are everywhere and it’s simple to ask someone to hack one open so I could add a straw for coconut water, which is very balancing in that climate.
I can still feel the experience working on my psyche, as my friend Arlisa (who is there for several months now) warned me about before I left! It is difficult to describe – the island feels like it operates on a different frequency – from the heart rather than the head – I like to tell people you’re either going to quickly learn to flow with it or start drinking alcohol in high quantities…
